Exemplar Global interviewed Mel DeGregorio, GreenUp’s Lead Facilitator and Principal Consultant on ISO auditing, environmental management systems and auditor training…
EXEMPLAR GLOBAL: Tell me about your background and how you found your way to auditing.
MEL DEGREGORIO: I had two great passions in my life: Volleyball, which I have played for more than 25 years, and horseback riding. The problem was, though, that I was too short for volleyball to become an international player and too tall for being a horse jockey! While I was thinking and hoping that I have got to be good for something (laughter), my delightful thermodynamics course in college was very subtly forcing me to re-evaluate my life choices every week…

I lived it… I’ve witnessed it in countless occasions…
I feel the pain of people who, for whatever reason, found themselves with the environmental responsibilities at an industrial facility without proper background, knowledge or applicable experience in the environmental field. Not knowing what you don’t know could be quite of a disadvantage… Knowing where to start from and how, the complexity of environmental regulations, penalties, fines, earning the respect of leadership team and the trust of your peers and other workers could be physically, emotionally and mentally exhausting and draining. Getting a handle on all of this takes some time, effort, commitment and strategy.
I was a NEW environmental professional once, I understand! I see you…
Now, I have the platform to share what I’ve learned in the past 18 years dealing with hundreds of environmental professionals, and industrial facilities in the U.S. and other countries. My goal is to prevent you, the new folks, from making the well-known professional and behavioral mistakes, and steer you in the right direction along with sharing a few secrets of the trade… Environmental field could be your calling.
Think about discovering your life purpose, meeting and exceeding your potential while unleashing that abundant, endless, wild inner energy that only shows up when you have a purpose, passion and sharp focus… When you combine your passion with persistence, commitment, positive attitude and smart work; then comes the priceless, sweet and addictive taste of success… It’s irresistible!
I’m not saying that environmental field is everybody’s calling. All I’m saying is that since you’ve already become the environmental person at your site (unless you quit already!), don’t just dismiss the field yet or get frustrated and resentful before you give it a chance. Find out more about it, transition into your new position by surrounding yourself with the right knowledge. We all know that knowledge is power! After you know more about this field, if you’re still not interested, by all means, then, move on to the other things that will make you happy and make you feel satisfied in your career.
During my environmental regulatory compliance and IS0 14001 environmental management system audits at different sites, do you know how many times I’ve witnessed the helplessness of the environmental managers, coordinators or specialists? The answer is more than I wanted to see.
I used to say to myself, if they only knew how to make this better in such an easier manner… I’ve tried to help, of course, as much as I could, without violating the given time and conflict of interest guidelines and restrictions; however, I knew that they needed more…
So I decided to start this mission of helping the new environmental professionals. As a first step; I created a 2-hour webinar, which is only the start of an attempt to smooth this transition for you, and help you towards excelling at your job, and perhaps, help the environmental field to gain some talented people just like you… I have so much to share…
